Lego Pattern Copy

In this activity, we’ll use Lego bricks to create colorful patterns. The goal is to train our minds to recognize and replicate patterns, which is a crucial math skill. You can start with simple patterns and gradually increase the level of complexity.

Assorted Lego bricks

Easy mode

Start by making a simple pattern, such as alternating two different colors of Lego bricks. Then, ask your child to recreate the same pattern with their own bricks.

Hard mode

Make a more complex pattern using multiple colors or shapes. Your child should try to replicate this pattern. This might take a bit more thought and concentration!

Challenge mode

The challenge mode takes pattern recognition to the next level. Continue a pattern sequence that you’ve started or ask your child to create their own pattern that matches the complexity of the one you’ve made.

Some prompts to encourage the kid

  • Great job, little builder, keep going!
  • I wonder if you can make a pattern as colorful as a rainbow!
  • Wow, you’re a real-life pattern master!
  • Can you build a pattern as tall as a dinosaur?
  • Amazing work! Can you show me another pattern?

Important things to keep in mind

  • Remember, the goal of this activity is to practice pattern recognition and replication, so patience and encouragement are key
  • Make sure to praise your child’s efforts and not just the accuracy of their pattern replication.
