Earth Layers

In the Earth Layers activity, we will become mini geologists! We’ll be using playdough or colored rice to create the layers of Earth in a clear cup. This will help us understand what makes up our planet. We will create the crust, the mantle, and the core. Each layer has its own color, so it will be like creating a rainbow of Earth!

Easy mode

In this Easy Mode, we will create the 3 basic layers of the Earth. First, we will start with the crust, add a layer of mantle and finally the core. We will use different colors of playdough for each layer. It’s like making a three-layer cake!

Hard mode

In Hard Mode, it’s time to become a real geologist! Let’s add labels to each layer of our Earth. We can write them on small pieces of paper and stick them to the right layer. Don’t forget to use different colors for each layer!

Challenge mode

In Challenge Mode, let’s add a fourth layer – the inner core! Can you explain what each layer does? The crust is the Earth’s skin, the mantle is like a hot, gooey filling, the outer core is liquid metal and the inner core is solid metal. You’re a real geologist now!

Some prompts to encourage the kid

  • Wow! You’re building your very own Earth!
  • What color will you choose for the mantle layer? I can’t wait to see!
  • You’re doing a fantastic job! The Earth is taking shape!
  • Let’s dig deeper and discover what lies beneath the Earth’s crust!
  • Are you ready to add the inner core? What a great geologist you are!

Important things to keep in mind

  • This activity enhances the child’s understanding of the earth’s structure in a fun and engaging way
  • It promotes cognitive development and creativity.
